Take a deep breath of relief! Finally, the computing centre – of one of Germany’s largest operators – is back up to speed, fit for the future! That’s thanks to ZIEHL-ABEGG as well. As well? Let’s be honest: Mostly so! The IT systems were at the latest state of the art, really. They’ve been kept there all the time. The fans that are essential for cooling, however, reached their limits one day. There was an urgent need to act! The pros at ZIEHL-ABEGG came, did the math, calculated – and figured out that a bit of “retrofitting” wouldn’t be enough. The only energetically and economically sensible solution was: Retrofitblue. The entire re-cooling fan inventory had to be energetically renovated. 64 fixed-speed (AC-)axial fans were replaced by highly efficient ZIEHL-ABEGG fans ZAplus with ECblue motor technology.

The catch-up demand is gigantic
The problems this computing centre had are shared by any number of commercial properties: They are growing old. The basic substance of the production systems often is impeccable – but they show great deficits in their ventilation. Fans that have been working for 10 or 20 years fall short of meeting contemporary energy demands and statutory standards by far. The average system efficiencies of the outdated fans are below 40 percent. (Modern, energy-efficient fans can reach energy-saving potentials in excess of 70 percent with their much improved system efficiencies.) Retrofitblue makes it possible to maintain the old, working substance of the system and to continue tried and tested work processes. Protection of existing systems often is decisive for only replacing the fans, since new construction permits for the plant would be impossible to acquire.

Investment costs vs. operating costs
While the share of a fan in the investment costs for a room-air-technical system doesn’t make up any more than three percent, its share in the operating costs goes up to 70 percent. Outdated fans therefore are one of the main causes of too-high energy consumption in existing systems, and thus in commercial properties in general.

Replacement usually is the smartest move

Many convincing arguments support consistent exchange of the fans: In the last few years, the development of more efficient, economic and silent fans has progressed rapidly, since new technologies have radically changed the market. This is complemented by the latest insights into materials from which fans can be made today – such as ZAmid, the specifically developed high-performance composite by ZIEHL-ABEGG.
While volume flow has been produced with a few very large fans in the past, a group of small fans – the ZAcube fan formation – is available at much better conditions today, and improves the noise values by far. This is particularly relevant in rooms that are accessible to people. Therefore, replacing fans is sensible even in smaller systems!
