Energy-saving and efficiently cooled
09/18 Between the Isle of Grain in Kent and Maasvlakte near Rotterdam, the subterranean world of power has been good recently. In a large-scale modernisation project, ZIEHL-ABEGG with its outstanding fans was able to ensure safety in air technology, as well as impressive power-technical economic results. Let us start at the beginning, however. The great modernisation measure was initiated due to high costs caused by out-dated technology, that made cooling of the rectifier stations obsolete, inefficient and expensive. The owners and operators of the high-voltage direct current interconnector BritNed had to take urgent measures. In order to continue to supply the energy demand of Great Britain and North-Western Europe with unique efficiency, reliability and safety, thorough modernisation was no longer optional. The highly renowned international organisation BritNed chose ZIEHL-ABEGG and its RETROFITBLUE program for this task. As the only manufacturer of highly efficient bionic fans with state-of-the-art ECblue motor technology, ZIEHL-ABEGG had the right fans to let BritNed feel the future once their old ones were replaced. The net results after the exchange for the ZAplus fan systems has been more than satisfactory for the client as well. The modern fans significantly reduce power consumption while at the same time reducing noise to a minimum. The fan systems, which were designed for sustainability, with the blue technology of ZIEHL-ABEGG, are particularly characterised by their unique bionic blade concept. The blade design mimics that of the wings of an owl. Interacting with ECblue motor technology, the BritNed Retrofitblue measure reduces power consumption by 450,000 kWh per year, and improves the CO2 balance by 51 tons per year. Installation of the ZAplus fans leads to further advantages as well. The fans are equipped with special rings that permit simple access in case of maintenance. The system will no longer need to be stopped or turned off for maintenance purposes, which can minimise cost-intensive examinations. What used to take about two weeks, is now done in a single day.
This Retrofitblue measure by ZIEHL-ABEGG gained great praise for ZIEHL-ABEGG from Kevin Rendell, operations manager of BritNed, who was particularly impressed by the fast and user-friendly installation of the fans. The old cooling fans are, by the way, recycled.
The special service ring facilitates access for care and maintenance, thereby reducing cost-intensive interruptions to a minimum.
