Best Practice Retrofit by ZIEHL-ABEGG
Turn old into new!
Retrofit refers to the modernization or retrofitting of existing systems or installations with new, more advanced technologies. Instead of completely replacing an old system, a retrofit involves upgrading certain components to improve efficiency, performance or safety.
This is often done in areas such as industry, energy technology or building technology in order to save costs, extend the service life of the system and reduce energy consumption.
In this way, modern standards can be achieved without the need for a completely new acquisition.
ZIEHL-ABEGG offers tailor-made retrofit solutions in the field of ventilation technology to modernize existing ventilation and air conditioning systems and make them more energy-efficient. By integrating the latest fan technology, such as EC motors, energy consumption can be significantly reduced. The retrofit solutions not only enable cost savings, but also improve operational safety and reduce CO₂ emissions.
Thanks to its broad product portfolio and many years of experience in the field of fan technology, ZIEHL-ABEGG guarantees smooth adaptation to existing systems and compliance with modern environmental standards. This allows companies to benefit from sustainable and efficient ventilation technology in the long term.
Retrofit fan replacement in a Swiss hospital
In a hospital, operational safety is a very high priority. All of the building’s systems must be kept running reliably at all times.
In this best practice case, only a single large fan was installed for the entire system before the retrofit. The major disadvantage: if this single fan fails, the entire ventilation system stops and the hospital is no longer sufficiently ventilated and air-conditioned. In hospitals in particular, fans are responsible and indispensable for regulating the temperature and humidity to ensure optimum conditions for patients and sensitive equipment. This also maintains good air quality and reduces the risk of germs and bacteria spreading. This is particularly important in operating theatres, intensive care units and isolation rooms. A hospital also often has rooms in which chemical or medical gases are used that need to be filtered safely.
As part of the modernization with ZIEHL-ABEGG, the system was upgraded to four smaller fans, which now run in parallel. The distribution of power to several fans ensures greater safety and also brings considerable energy savings thanks to the increase in efficiency.
While the old system had an electricity consumption of 86,566 kWh, the four new fans only consume a total of 20,007 kWh per year.
