Bionic energy savers – fans with integrated power quality

Harmonics under Control for the perfect energy transition, e.g. in data centres

In view of the ongoing climate change, the reduction of CO₂ emissions is a key issue. Energy-efficient solutions not only contribute to greater sustainability, but also to lower operating costs.

The engineers and development teams at ZIEHL-ABEGG have tackled this issue and developed bionic fans equipped with highly intelligent components to become real energy savers.

Greater efficiency, assured grid quality, minimised energy costs

Whether in industry, medical technology or the IT sector, such as data centres: 100% power quality is a MUST, as faults can have serious consequences and also lead to expensive reactive power. The newly developed high-tech system from ZIEHL-ABEGG counteracts all this by offering the full programme for safe compensation of harmonics with an additional energy-saving effect for any air or ventilation requirements.

Speed-controlled, three-phase motors have long been standard in modern automated process plants as well as in commercial and public buildings. Combining this standard with the use of efficient EC motors opens up additional savings potential – a benefit for the environment and the budget.

Power electronics are used to adapt the speed of modern motors precisely to demand. However, this leads to the consumption of non-linear currents. Even if one advantage of these currents is the low displacement reactive power, undesirable interactions with other devices in the network can occur if the supply network is not designed for the characteristic distortion reactive power. They can also cause higher temperatures on motors, transformers and generators. It is therefore crucial to minimise harmonics.

Solution for minimising harmonics for first-class grid quality

External harmonic filters or integrated power factor corrections are available to reduce the above-mentioned effects. Active filters are a proven solution for compensating for unwanted harmonics in the current flow and thus significantly improving the power quality.

With the high-quality solutions from ZIEHL-ABEGG, such as external filters with SiC (silicon carbide) technology or integrated PFC (power factor correction) technology with active front-end technology, THDi values of < 5 % and power factors of almost 1 can be achieved.

Advantages of active ZIEHL-ABEGG filters

  • Sinusoidal power consumption:
    Reduction of mains distortion
  • No reactive power:
    Maximum utilisation of energy
  • High grid stability and efficiency:
Improvement in overall system reliability and flexibility
  • Protection against equipment damage:
Avoidance of failures due to voltage distortions

In future, data centres will increasingly be among the biggest energy guzzlers. At around 350 to 400 terawatt hours worldwide, the power consumption of data centres has grown horrendously – and the trend is rising.

Reliable storage and data flow, in the worldwide data centres

With their large power range, the energy-saving fans represent the future performance standard for ensuring functioning, reliable cooling and ventilation and for guaranteeing an efficient, high-performance network infrastructure.
