Successful retrofit project of air handling unit & dry coolers!
Rabobank is one of the largest banks in the Netherlands, with 43,000 employees worldwide. Their largest customers come from the Food & Agri sector. The head office, located in Utrecht, is an iconic building for many locals. Under the mission ‘Growing a better world together’, Rabobank focuses, among other things, on making their buildings more sustainable.
Together with our partner AQ Group, ZIEHL-ABEGG BENELUX prepared the head office for the future by implementing sustainable improvements.
The challenge of the project

The head office is a large office building that is used during the day, which is why it was important to realise the project as quickly as possible so that the employees experience as little inconvenience as possible. They were looking for a system with day/night control, high reliability and good ventilation flow, which is why they chose fans and control technology from ZIEHL-ABEGG.
Smart and sustainable solution from ZIEHL-ABEGG


The retrofit concept meant that the entire ventilation system and the recoolers could be preserved. Together with a team of ten technicians, the old fans were removed, the rooms cleaned and new, sustainable fans installed.
Together with our smart Unicon control module, everything was optimally harmonised with the existing building management system. UNIcon control modules from ZIEHL-ABEGG record system values and use them to control power units such as frequency converters or EC fans. Pre-programmed operating modes can be selected for typical customer applications, with the appropriate sensors being connected depending on the application.
In this way, Rabobank not only fulfils all its requirements after just two weeks of conversion, but also the new legislation for sustainable building.

The amortisation period of this retrofit project is on average between 2 and 5 years and enables savings of up to 50 % in energy costs, lower maintenance costs and CO2 emissions.
The retrofit not only involves converting old, indirectly driven fans to direct-drive motors, but also increasing operational reliability by working with multiple fans. This allows the system to continue running if one of the fans fails.
In addition, thanks to our intelligent control technology, it is possible to read out the predictive maintenance remotely. This allows you to recognise at an early stage whether the fans need to be serviced and thus prevent breakdowns. In short, operational reliability is significantly increased.
As the end customer does not have to replace the entire system, this is not only attractive in terms of price, but also in practical terms. A win-win situation for everyone. With Retrofit, Rabobank is making a major contribution to its mission of ‘Growing a better world together’.
